WHAT WE DO

Sarah’s lived experience is at the heart of We’re Here For You Canada. In this documentary, she shares her journey and the moment that revealed a critical gap in post-assault care — one that led to the creation of WHFYC.

This film is not about trauma for shock value. It is about resilience, dignity, and why no survivor should ever leave a hospital feeling exposed or alone.

Why Dignity Matters

SPONSOR A KIT

WHFYC was founded by Sarah Sherman after her own experience navigating the aftermath of sexual violence and a forensic exam. Like so many survivors across Canada, Sarah was discharged from the hospital without clothing, comfort, or clear support — left to navigate one of the hardest moments of her life feeling exposed and alone.

What stayed with her was not only the trauma of the assault, but the shock of how easily dignity disappeared once medical procedures were complete. That moment revealed a systemic gap Sarah knew should not exist — and did not have to continue.

Rather than accepting this as “just the way it is,” Sarah began asking a different question: What would it look like if survivors were met with care, warmth, and dignity at the moment they leave the hospital?

WHFYC was built from that question. Today, Sarah leads the organization with a commitment to survivor-centered, trauma-informed care — working alongside nurses, hospitals, and communities to ensure no survivor ever leaves a forensic exam in paper scrubs again.

Sarah is also the author of a memoir that explores survivorship, dignity, and the realities many people face in the aftermath of sexual violence — especially in moments when systems fail to provide care beyond procedure.

Written with honesty and compassion, the book offers insight into lived experience while challenging the silence and gaps that continue to exist in post-assault support. It is not written to shock, but to educate, validate, and open the door to deeper understanding and change.

The values at the heart of the book are the same ones that guide We’re Here For You Canada today: dignity, humanity, and the belief that survivors deserve more than survival — they deserve care.
